Lupicia – Fukamushi Sencha Matsuri

Name: Fukamushi Sencha Matsuri
Company: Lupicia
Type: Green, loose
Cost: $7 for 1.76oz
Lupicia’s website describes this as a “distinctively mellow and full-bodied green tea”. Sounds nice. When I opened the sample pack of tea, the first thing I noticed was how incredibly dusty this tea was. It seemed like some of the full leaf pieces were crushed and pulverised. I can’t say whether or not it was just my sample or if this is just a characteristic of this particular tea.
The aroma of the dry leaf smelled gentle and vegetal. I steeped this using 4 grams of leaf for about 6oz of water that was around 160 degrees. The instructions suggest a steep time of 45 seconds to 1 minute, and I choose to go with 45 seconds.

When I poured the tea into my cup I got a kick out of the light neon green color. Sadly, a lot of the particles ended up in my cup despite the fine infuser I used. Can you see them in the picture? The aroma of the liquor was distinctly green.
I took my first sip and immediately noticed quite a bit of astringency. In fact there is so much astringency to this tea that I had to focus to pull out the other flavors. The taste of the tea underneath the dominate astringency is vegetal and slightly sweet. It would have been quite lovely if it wasn’t for the astringent nature. I really think there was too much for it to be enjoyable. I didn’t hate it but this will not become a stable in my tea collection. I much prefer green teas that leave out the over astringent taste.
